My experience

Innovation and inspiration

With extensive manufacturing experience gained in both the UK and USA, I have broad sector expertise, especially in aerospace, defence and rail. Most recently I have embedded cultural, behavioural and organisational change into a traditional engineering business, transforming its productivity and profile and achieving 52% growth over 2 years (recognised by the East Midlands Chamber of Commerce as the fastest growing company in the region) whilst growing its structure from 140 heads to over 300.

A skilled team-builder, facilitator and negotiator, I bring a mix of inspiration and innovation to my work. My vision is to enable people and businesses to take their capabilities into a new orbit of excellence.

As a qualified and innovative engineer, holding a number of patents, I strongly believe in championing innovation in industry – both by introducing new technologies, whether that is from NASA or involvement in the ‘Catapult’ and Knowledge Transfer Programmes.


My philosophy

Creating the conditions of success from within

Over many years, I have seen first-hand how consultants, in pursuit of continuous improvement, tend to focus almost exclusively on ‘improvement’ rather than ‘continuous’. Typically, process changes are imposed without gaining the buy-in of the operators. As a result, these changes often bring short-term success, but are rarely enduring. As a CEO faced with the need for transformational change in my own business I knew that the long-term answer necessitated involving and enabling those same people in the change process – with exceptional results. By involving them, they became proud of their contribution and an environment was created that enabled them to take responsibility and ownership. This, coupled with relevant tools and support – including extensive training – lay the foundations for long and lasting change: in other words, a focus on ‘continuous’ as the catalyst of ‘improvement’.

I call this the ‘valency effect’. In simple terms ‘valency’ is the capability to combine.  Bringing this analogy to people and organisations, we simply begin to ‘energise’ colleagues, creating the conditions for them to create something new and enduring.

In other words, I aim to create a collaborative environment which enables everyone to contribute to building a better long-term business. This is what I mean by creating the conditions of success from within.

Typically working with SMEs (up to £30m turnover), I look to create an environment which delivers ground breaking performance by enabling others to excel at what they do – as individuals, and together as a team. Providing a sustainable platform that continues to work long after the consultancy period, this can be effectively applied on an interim or project basis, broadly covering the following:

A proven leader with strong commercial, strategic and operational capability, I specialise in identifying the barriers to success and building structures to overcome them. My leadership capabilities embrace the following:

  • Transformational. Working alongside leadership teams and colleagues, I help shift behaviour and culture to create a thriving business, driving successful and sustainable organisational change against a defined outcome – whether that’s rapid growth, directional change or preparation for sale
  • Turnaround. While introducing tactics which make an immediate impact on cash management, P&L and the balance sheet, I also seek to lay foundations for a sustainable future, helping create long term value in the business

  • Entrepreneurial ‘enablement’. Opening the commercial doors for innovative ideas, I work with businesses to bring their ideas to market, transforming their profile and profitability in the process
